Grade 9 & 10 Social Studies

Presenter: Al Friesen Al Friesen is a Social Studies Consultant for Manitoba Education, Citizenship & Youth with responsibilities for development and implementation of senior years curricula. Al has taught in several locations in Manitoba and overseas, and has also lectured at Brandon University. He has worked on a number of curriculum development teams for Manitoba Education and has facilitated social studies and geographic information systems workshops in western and northern Canada and has presented at several national and international subject council conferences.

Day & Time: Tuesday Feb. 3 AM

Description: This session will provide an overview of the philosophy and rationale of the Manitoba social studies curricula. This includes the vision and goals of social studies, citizenship as a core concept, and the General and Specific Learning Outcomes. The session will also look at social studies and the learning process, classroom-based assessment and issues related to diversity, equity, and social justice in the teaching of social studies. Teachers are asked to bring copies of the Grade 9/10 Foundation for Implementation curriculum documents for reference during the session.
