K-8 Social Studies Computer Lab
Presenter: Gary Evans Gary Evans is a retired primary teacher having taught Grade 2 and Grades 2/3 combined classes as well as Middle Years classes in his career. He is member of K-8 Manitoba Social Studies Inservice Team, and a presenter at SAG, Summer Institute, and various inservices in Manitoba at the K-8 levels. He previously taught teachers-in-training at University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg. He was involved in the writing of the Grades 5 and 8 Social Studies texts.

Description: Information and resources about Contemporary Canadian Aboriginal Communities will be shared at this session. Seven communities from across Canada will be explored. Resources will support the seven communities and will be available for teachers to view. Teachers will be able to explore and discuss how to use this basic information with their students. This is a resource to expand the Grade 2 curriculum document.

Standard First Aid
Presenter: Tom Lyons Tom Lyons is currently employed as a Health Care Aide in the Benito Health Center. He is a 25 year member of the Benito Fire Department and Deputy Chief for the past few years. He has been an Emergency Medical Responder, first with the fire department and later with Benito First Responders, which he coordinates. He is an Emergency Services Instructor for the Manitoba Emergency Services College and a CPR Instructor for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Description: Comprehensive First Aid & CPR techniques for those who need training for work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the workplace or home. Summary:
The session was broken up between 3 speakers. The first was Trevor Brown. He spoke about using problem solving to catch students attention to a topic. After speaking with Carol Larson who saw him for a whole day, I think he was just getting started when his time was up. I’d like to hear the end of his “story”. I’d like to see where he takes the problem solving to and how he incorporates that into a whole program. One lady commented that she saw him for a 5-day session that really painted the whole picture. The other two speakers had some good ideas that I could incorporate today, but they weren’t dynamic speakers and I’m not sure I would want to attend any additional session with them.
I will be sharing this information with other math teachers on staff as we plan for our new curriculum in the Grade 9 and 10 areas.
I am going to start to incorporate relevant problems that will allow all students to gain or share some understanding of the topic as an introduction or summary of a topic."
